Freddie Blay speaking on party unity and internal discipline within the NPP

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has launched a sharp rebuke against Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng over his recent description of the party as a “fake party,” calling the remarks reckless, offensive, and damaging to party cohesion.

Speaking in a Citi FM interview, Mr Blay expressed deep concern that such comments came from a senior party figure who continues to identify as a member of the NPP. He argued that the statements strike at the heart of party unity and reflect a troubling level of irresponsibility.

According to Mr Blay, the incident exposes one of the challenges inherent in democratic systems, where freedom of expression allows individuals to air views that may harm the very institutions they belong to.

“Anyone who speaks in that manner while claiming membership of the party is acting irresponsibly. It is reckless. This is one of the prices democracy pays — people are allowed to say anything, and you are then forced to defend them, even when they speak foolishly,” he stated.

Mr Blay’s reaction follows an interview granted by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng on Channel One TV, during which the former Environment Minister openly criticised the NPP, describing it as a “fake party” and stating that he no longer recognises the current leadership of the party.

Despite the growing backlash, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng has maintained that he has no intention of resigning from the NPP. His comments, however, have triggered internal party processes that could potentially lead to disciplinary action, including expulsion.

The former minister has further indicated that he will not honour any invitation to appear before either the party’s National Executive Committee or its Disciplinary Committee, setting the stage for a possible escalation of internal tensions within the NPP.
