Electricity Company of Ghana issues public warning on cashless payments and fraud

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a public alert cautioning customers against fraudsters who are exploiting electricity payment processes, firmly stating that the company no longer accepts physical cash for any transaction.

In a notice released to the public, ECG announced that it has transitioned fully to a cashless payment system as part of efforts to strengthen internal controls and protect customers from financial scams.

According to the company, ECG does not request payment for its services through phone calls or unsolicited messages, warning that any such demands should be treated as fraudulent.

Customers were advised to make all payments for electricity services, bills, and related fees only through officially approved channels. ECG stressed that payments must be initiated personally by customers using the ECG Power App or by dialling the company’s short code, *226#.

The power distributor urged the public to remain vigilant, cautioning that fraudsters often impersonate company officials to deceive unsuspecting customers. ECG emphasised that any unexpected calls or messages demanding payment do not originate from the company.

To support efforts to combat fraudulent activities, ECG encouraged customers to promptly report suspicious calls, messages, or payment requests to its customer service line on 0302 611611.

The company further appealed to the public to cooperate with its ongoing anti-fraud campaign, noting that customer awareness and vigilance are essential to safeguarding both consumers and the company from financial losses.
