The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has interrogated the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, over allegations of vote-buying connected to the party’s parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7.
Sources within the OSP say the invitation was part of preliminary investigative procedures after complaints were filed alleging voter inducement during the exercise.
Allegations Under Investigation
Investigators are examining claims that items including television sets, boiled eggs and other goods were distributed to influence the outcome of the internal election — raising concerns about possible violations of Ghana’s electoral and anti-corruption laws.
According to officials familiar with the case, the probe also covers allegations of assault, obstruction of OSP officers and corruption-related offences.
However, authorities stress the interrogation does not imply guilt and forms only part of fact-finding efforts.
Bail Granted, Probe Continues
After several hours of questioning, Baba Jamal was granted self-recognisance bail.
The OSP has yet to issue an official statement outlining potential charges, but sources indicate the investigation remains ongoing and will follow due process.
Candidate Denies Wrongdoing
Baba Jamal has previously rejected the vote-buying accusations, maintaining that his actions complied with electoral rules.
The case has attracted public attention following the Ayawaso East primary and renewed debate about enforcement of electoral regulations in Ghana’s internal party contests.
OSP Reaffirms Anti-Corruption Mandate
The Special Prosecutor’s office says it will continue to investigate corruption and corruption-related offences impartially, regardless of the individuals involved, as part of efforts to protect the integrity of Ghana’s democratic processes.
