Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has called for a change in the medical school recruitment system to increase the number of doctors in the country.

According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for the country to have more doctors which will not only prepare us for future emergencies but will increase the exports of medical practitioners outside the country.

Speaking on Net 2 TV, Mr. Agyapong argued that the current medical system is fraught with challenges such as nepotism which disallows interested and brilliant persons from getting recruited.

“The first thing I want the President to do is to change the medical school recruitment system we have. We have a bogus system. They have to increase the numbers. If you are business-minded you will know that when you increase the numbers you can sell and negotiate doctors among countries like Cuba does. What is the population of Cuba compared to Ghana and they are even able to export doctors? One lady got 7As and a B and she wanted to be a doctor they denied her and gave her a lab technician just because she had a B in English.”

“Today, this COVID-19 has exposed the economy to show that we need more doctors. They should double the intake of medical doctors in this country. When they go for the interviews they ask whether your father or your uncle is also a medical doctor, it’s a bogus system unless a politician leads people, it’s a bogus system. We’re losing brains,” he said.
