General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu says the 2020 general elections will take place at all costs irrespective of the situation at hand.

According to him, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the country will not stop the Electoral Commission from conducting this year’s 2020 polls, insisting the elections will not be postponed.

In an interview monitored by ABC News, the NPP General Secretary said postponing the December 7 elections may create chaos in the country since the governing party’s mandate ends on January 6, 2021.

Giving detailed explanations he said, “The fact of the matter is that, whether we like it or not, December 7 elections will come off. The constitution is very tight, the President’s power will come to an end on January 6. Can you imagine the commotion and the distraction of this fine country if there is a constitutional crisis, can you imagine? It will be worse than the coronavirus…We will make the decision (to vote) whether we like it or not.”

He cited examples where South Korea and Mali have successfully held elections amidst coronavirus saying Ghana will emulate the standards used in conducting such polls.

“We will put in place proper measures to protect the lives of people and their health and also put in place the necessary processes for elections.”

John Boadu brushed off arguments by some political activists that the elections can be put on hold for the Speaker of Parliament to run the country.

He indicated that it won’t hold water because the Speaker will have to allow voting after the next three months, stressing that elections would have to take place at all costs if Ghanaians want the country to move on.
