The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of a sympathiser of the opposition NDC, Major Boakye-Djan(rtd) over what has been described as his ‘warmongering’ comments.

In a recent interview on Okay FM monitored by ABCNews, Osahene Boakye Gyan  warned of a possible civil war should the Electoral Commission proceed with its plans of compiling a new voters register.

According to him, the attempt to compile the new voter roll will plunge the country into chaos saying “what they are doing now, they are walking us straight into civil war and if they want it, they will get it.”

This has incurred the wrath of the NPP who have condemned the comments and charged the Ghana Police Service to as a matter of urgency, arrest, and bring Boakye-Djan, to book.

In reaction to the comments, the party’s National Youth Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye said the background of Major Boakye-Djan in past coups in the country’s recent history cannot be glossed over.

“Major Boakye-Djan, giving his past involvement in coup d’etat: giving his motive and choice of words against the EC’s legitimate exercises make it imperative that the Police arrest, question and caution him.”

“The analogy given by Major Boakye-Djan that a communicator of the NPP had said the NPP will win the 2020 elections with 1.3 million votes margin is untenable and flawed because, in 2016, former President Mahama made a similar projection to the effect that he will have a one-touch victory but the outcome was catastrophic for him. So this is no proof of intent by the NPP and EC to rig the election.”

He also added that “the EC has not breached any law and at all times they have acted according to the dictates of the 1992 constitution and the Act that established it. If anybody has any contrary view, the person must proceed to court. The NPP has had several disagreements with the EC but never threatened to visit mayhem or civil war on Ghanaians.”
