Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has called for a re-look at the decision to ease COVID-19 restrictions considering the increasing number of cases.
In a televised address in April 2020, President Akufo-Addo eased restrictions on the movement of persons in parts of Accra and Kumasi to stem the spread of Coronavirus in the country.
The move made Ghana one of the first few countries in the world to have lifted restrictions amid concerns of a possible surge in COVID-19 cases.
But the government insisted it had the necessary measures in place to deal with any sudden increase in numbers.
Since then though, the country has recorded a significant number of new cases and COVID-19 deaths, a situation which has left many worried with some urging government to look at the possibility of locking down certain parts of the country to halt the horizontal spread of the virus.
Commenting on the development however, Prof. Gyampo called on the President and his advisors on health to begin to take another look at the decision to ease restrictions.
”Looking at the astronomic increase in the numbers of COVID-19 cases in Ghana, and the very disturbing reality that an infected person puts the lives of his family at risk, I am wondering whether we shouldn’t rethink the science that is informing our easing of restrictions,” he said.
He continued, ”We partially shut down when we had recorded less than ten cases. We are now easing restrictions when we have more than eleven thousand cases and still counting. Yes, we may have to live with this pandemic for some time. But the way the numbers keep soaring calls for a change in the way we are tackling the problem.”
