Ghanaian opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential running mate, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has said that the level of insecurity in the country is a course for concern.
This pronouncement comes after the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Ekow Hayford was gruesomely assassinated by gun men.
According to the running mate of former President John Mahama, the killing of Mfantseman MP Ekow Hayford is not pleasant news for any politician and Ghanaians as a whole.
The governing New Patriotic Party lawmaker was shot dead by armed robbers on the Abeadze Dominase-Abeadze Duadzi-Mankessim road at dawn after by supposed armed robbers on his from his usual campaign ahead of the December polls.
The said incident happened on Friday dawn as he was returning from a campaign trip at Dominase to his residence at Mankessim.
Speaking about it in an interview with Accra-based TV3, Prof Opoku-Agyemang said: “I don’t think this is something anybody would want to wake up to; that somebody has been murdered for whatever the reason may be”.
“But we know that some of these things do happen in our country and it is my trust and hope that the security agencies would take the necessary measures to ensure that it doesn’t happen again and that whoever did this would be brought to book.”
“There’s been concerns about the level of insecurity in the country.
“I don’t think that anyone would be so secure that they will say they don’t need to take our security seriously.
“It is something that every government has to continuously work at because people have to feel safe.
“My heart goes to his family, Ghanaians and everyone.
“And all of us should be cautious. Safety should be everybody’s concern and the government must ensure that those who commit these crimes are brought to book so it serves as a deterrent to others.”
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, is offering to pay GHS20,000 to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the murderers.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service and signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Superintendent Shiella Kessie Abayie-Buckman.
The Ghana Police Service indicated that the IGP “has dispatched specialised investigators from the Homicide and Anti-Armed robbery units of the CID Headquarters, to support the Central Region’s Crime Scene Team to solve the alleged robbery incident and murder” of the MP.
The statement further stated that “the IGP is offering a reward of twenty thousand Ghana Cedis (20,000.00) to any person who gives credible information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.”
The police administration also extended its condolences to the family of the murdered MP and his constituents.
It further urged the general public “to remain calm and support police in the investigation of this case.”
