Flagbearer of the opposition NDC John Mahama has accused the media of failing to hold President Akufo-Addo accountable for promises made before assuming office in 2017.
This comes on the back of allegations by the former President that, President Akufo-Addo has failed in his fight against ‘galamsey’ in the country for which reason he put his presidency on the line.
Mr Mahama blamed part of the problem on the media for failing to expose the rots in government’s galamsey fight despite knowing the truth.
“The media is not holding government accountable despite knowing what is going on in the galamsey sector,” he said in an interview with The Multimedia Group journalists.
He accused government of seizing concessions belonging to the ordinary Ghanaian and handing them over to members of its party.
“So if you go to the mining communities, DCEs and NPP party chairmen are actively in the galamsey business,” he said.
He also added that, the high level of scrutiny exercised by media during his tenure has fallen during the Akufo-Addo era.
This, he noted has contributed to the President either fulfilling part of a promise made before assuming office or not fulfilling some promises at all.
“Government officials have never been involved in galamsey in our time as compared to now.
“Akufo-Addo has failed when it comes to the fight against galamsey and he probably should even not be running for office,” he said.
He also touched on the President’s promise to vacate his seat if he failed to completely root out galamsey from the country.
President Akufo-Addo in 2017 put his Presidency on the line with a commitment to ending illegal mining in the country.
Despite government introducing the ‘Operation Vanguard’ taskforce to aid in the fight, Mr Mahama says government has failed abysmally with the introduction of the fight.
He, therefore, has asked President Akufo-Addo to resign from the Presidency, in line with his promise.
