The mother of the 13-year old boy Michael Kofi Asiamah, who died after undergoing two brain surgeries at Korle-Bu, says the hospital is outdated and that their bad equipment led to the death of her son.
Asiamah became a social media sensation after $30,000 was raised online to fund his brain surgery, with Sarkodie and many celebrities promoting his case and encouraging Ghanaians to donate.
According to his mother, Cordelia, Korle-Bu did not have the needed modern and state-of-the-art equipment needed for her son’s surgery and their ICU is so understaffed and under-equipped.
She said the doctors at the hospital are fantastic and do their job very well but the problem is that they don’t have the needed equipment to work.
She also revealed the neurosurgery department has only four beds in their ICU when there are hundreds of such cases catered to daily.
“I had absolute confidence in the doctors at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The doctors did not let us down, but the system did,” she told Citi Fm in an interview today.
Cordelia said the system in Ghana is broken and that leads to more deaths than is necessary.
Per her narration, simple procedures like CT scans, MRI and other necessary procedures are hard to come by at Korle-Bu, which is supposed to be the best hospital not only in Ghana but West Africa.
It also emerged that when the boy collapsed before he died, there was no defibrillator to try and restart his heart because the hospital has only one and it was at a different department.
