The New Patriotic Party IT Coordinator for Asante Juaben constituency in the 2020 General elections, Nicholas Donkor was on Thursday allegedly assaulted severely by the Ahenema Kokoben police.
The police officers claimed he took a secret recording of them with his smart phone.
Mr. Donkor, popularly known as Ofa Nicho narrating the incident to ModernGhana described the ordeal as a near-death experience.
He told ModernGhana after being admitted to the hospital for a while that ‘I was given an injection and some medicines but I feel severe pains in my chest and waist’.
He said he had been accosted by four policemen at Ahenema Kokoben while on a business trip for not displaying the insurance on his car but he insisted his car was duly insured and they could verify digitally.
The police would not take that explanation and insisted it is criminal not to display his insurance on the car, ignoring the Vice Presidents’ recent digital advancement promotions.
According to him, he knew very well it was money the policemen wanted but ignored them and insisted he had insured his car.
After several attempts to convince them to verify digitally failed, they arrested him and took him to the Ahenema Kokoben Police Station where his plight worsened.
“There was a policewoman on duty identified as Leticia Badu who claimed I was filming her secretly and ordered the men to beat me. And they beat me mercilessly” Ofa Nicho recounted sadly.
According to him, he opted voluntarily to give them his phone to search whether they would see any such video on it but they refused and just enjoyed the molestation.
Unfortunately, Mr. Donkor has refused to report to the police saying if he had any such time to spend, ‘I would rather use that time to curse them at Antoa’, showing the growing mistrust in Ghana’s law enforcers.
The nation has barely digested discussion on a severe assault on a Citi FM/TV journalist and his colleague by some policemen at the National Security outfit.
Many say, such unprofessional acts by security men largely dent the image of the government in power, especially when the current president is touted to be a strong advocate of Human Rights.
But Ofa Nicho tells this reporter that, ‘it is high time we let such deviants pay for their foolish acts and not smear it on the president or government’.
