The Greater Accra Regional Organizer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu has described as a misplaced priority the move by government to set up a Development Bank in the country.
Speaking on Ghana Kasa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Mr. Nupkenu pointed out that there are several Commercial Banks set up by past governments to take care of development issues of the country hence he sees no need for a new bank in the system.
“I always say that any country without a development plan will continue to engage in a knee jerk approach to issues. Tomorrow we will again go and take a loan for a media bank,” he stated.
Ghana’s Ministry of Finance and the European Investment Bank have signed an agreement for the provision of a one hundred- and seventy-million-euro (€170 million) facility for the establishment of a new national bank, the Development Bank Ghana (DBG).
The deal was signed on Wednesday when President Akufo-Addo held a meeting with the President of the European Investment Bank, Dr Werner Hoyer, as part of his official visit to Belgium.
However, the NDC Organizer said the fact that the government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) doesn’t mean the deal is sealed.
“The loan will have to go to Parliament for them to explain to Ghanaians if it is important then that would make it binding on us. We have signed a number of agreements that never materialized. So Ghanaians will want to engage in an important venture and not anything at all,” Nukpenu stated.
Meanwhile, a Member of the New Patriotic Party Communications Team, Berima Sarpong Kumakuma also on the same platform disagreed with Nukpenu.
He argued that the new Development bank when established will create close to 10,000 jobs for Ghanaians.
