There has been a huge controversy over whether or not the proposed salaries to the spouses of the heads of state and their vices is in the right direction. There are a lot of Ghanaians who believe it is a not good for the economy of the nation, given that we are told due to Covid, we should tighten our belts and bear with the government as the times are hard.
Due to that, we have a lot of taxes imposed on Ghanaians as a measure to close the revenue short fall the pandemic has created.
The Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah tried to persuade the citizens that the former and current wives of the president’s do enjoy some allowances, and just that their move seeks to formalised what is already in existence. All these seem to fall on deaf ears however.
Do the wives of the presidents deserve salaries? A look at some Ghanaians who earn more than the President and the proposed salaries of the wife may change you.
1. Dr. Enerst Addison; the Governor of Bank of Ghana; Ghs125,346.
2. Reverend Owusu Amoah; Commissioner-General, Ghana Revenue Authority;Ghs105, 996.
3. Dr. John Ofori; Director General, Social Security and Insurance Trust;
Ghs101,382.
4. Joseph Boahen Addo; CEO, COCOBOD; Ghs85,775.
5. Dr. John Kofi Mensah;CEI of Agriculture Development Bank; Ghs75,310.
6. Samuel Sarpong; Managing Director, NIB Bank;Ghs70,465.
7. Mr. George Mensah Okli; Managing Director, BOST ;Ghs75,203.
With all the above people having basic salaries more the the Presidents and wife combined, do you still think the presidents wives deserve the salary ?
My humble opinion is that they deserve it, given that there are citizens who even earn more than what the President and the proposed salary of his wife is.
