When it comes to bribery and corruption, both the giver and receiver commit offence when the event takes place. In Ghana, paying bribes to some security personnel to get away with the law is very common. The Ghana Police Service has been highly tagged with this activity because drivers testify of this when on the road.
Sometimes, the reason why drivers give out bribes to Policemen is that they are in hurry and do not want to be detained at the checkpoint. A driver has shared his experience of how a Policewoman left her Apple’s iPhone 12 pro max on his passenger’s seat.
According to the driver, he was travelling from Aflao to Accra but when he got to Sogakope, he was stopped at a checkpoint by a group of Ghana Police team who accused him of not using his seat belt. He knows he is at fault but begged the Policewoman to please let him go that it won’t happen again but she refused. The policewoman told him that she is going to seize his driver’s licence and impound the car to their Police Station.
But after much plea for hours (over 3 hrs), she decided to collect GHS200 last from him and that was the money he had budgeted for his fuel and other expenses. He sadly gave out the money and went his way but he was about to enter Tema motorway, a phone rang beside him. According to him, the phone the Policewoman left in his car was Apple’s iPhone 12 pro max. This phone cost over GHS11,000.
When he picked the call, the Policewoman was begging him to please return her phone. He is now asking that what should he do? If you were to be in his shoes, what will you do? He stated that at that time, Angels and Demons are whispering things in his ear.
