Indeed, ‘Kwaku Frimpong de asɛm bɛba ampa’. The controversial holy kissing saga at St. Monica’s College of Education has landed an Accra based Metropolitan television aka Metro TV in trouble. The station misrepresented a Catholic bishop on a program meant to discuss the topic on its afternoon political talk show yesterday and that has infuriated the bishop in question.
Yesterday, on its afternoon political talk show dubbed Good Afternoon Ghana, Metro TV decided to delve further into the brouhaha. It therefore fielded in some dignitaries of Anglican faith and legal background to help in a zoom conversation. One of the penalists who was to be interviewed was one Very. Rev. Dr. Joseph Osei who was tagged as the acting dean of St. Cyprian Anglican church. But in a flyer that announced the program, that name came with the picture of Most. Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu, Catholic Bishop of Konongo-Mampong diocese. This got many people reacting to the misrepresentation of the two men.
The attention of Most. Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu was drawn to the flyer after the program had been aired. His attempts to have metro TV apologize for the error proofed futile. He therefore instructed his superior to take the matter up as it was not with his consent.
On his Facebook wall, the bishop who has 46 years experience in priesthood wrote “Good morning. How are you? You may have seen the poster below from Metro TV. I do not have any knowledge of the programme which, I understand, took place yesterday. Metro TV did not seek my permission before putting my picture on that programme. The name on the programme, as you can see, is not my full name. The position given me in the Anglican Church is strange, to say the least! I have asked Fr. Damian Dieu-Donne, our DEPSOCOM man at the National Catholic Secretariat, to take the matter up with Metro TV. We live in strange times!”
The similarities between the Anglican church and the Catholic church are definitely the cause of such misrepresentations. Many at times, an Anglican priest will do something and the Catholic church gets get the blame. Typical example is the recent kissing saga. The initial report was that a Catholic priest had kissed female students. Similarly, though uncommon, Catholic priest can do something and it is attributed to the Anglican church.
It is important that Metro TV dries the hey while the sun is still high. The bishop is a very kind man who easily forgives when one demonstrate some amount of remorse. But he will go every length to clear his hardwon reputation if Metro TV does not do the needful.
