The son of Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has married the daughter of a senior emir in the northern state of Kano.
The wedding of Yusuf Buhari and Zahra – the daughter of the emir of Bichi, Nasiru Ado Bayero – took place on Friday afternoon in the palace of Bichi emirate attracting thousands of attendees.
Among the VIPs there were the groom’s father President Muhammadu Buhari, his deputy, some of his ministers, his predecessor ex-president Goodluck Jonathan and former President of Niger Mouhamadou Issoufou.
The groom’s family paid 500,000 naira ($1200; £890) as the bride price, this is about 10 times than the average amount in northern Nigeria.
The pre-wedding pictures of the bride caused controversy on social media with some calling her clothing “immoral” because they thought the fabric was too sheer, but others defended her saying it’s her personal life.
The wedding ceremony was held amid heavy security presence, with police and military officers guarding the venue and stationed at strategic locations kilometers away.
The high-profile families have planned lavish wedding ceremonies to be held over the weekend.
The event stands in contrast to the rampant insecurity that has bedevilled north-western Nigeria in recent months.
The region has recorded a surge in kidnappings for ransom by armed criminal gangs.
