Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that many of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) major health policy proposals were originally conceived by the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, August 11, Mr Ablakwa described Dr Omane Boamah as a crucial strategist for President John Mahama during the party’s opposition years from 2017 to 2024.
“Many people are unaware that a significant number of the health sector commitments in the NDC manifesto were his ideas,” he noted.
According to Mr Ablakwa, initiatives such as free primary health care and the MahamaCares programme were conceptualised by Dr Omane Boamah and later embraced by the public. “He was a formidable strategist for President Mahama throughout the opposition period,” he added.
Dr Omane Boamah, who tragically died in the August 6 military helicopter crash, is remembered for his innovative policy thinking and political skill, which continue to influence the NDC’s governance agenda.
The crash claimed the lives of Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.
