Ablekuma North Election Result Delay Sparks Protest March By Minority

Members of Parliament’s Minority Caucus marched in protest on Wednesday to the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to deliver a petition on the unresolved results of the parliamentary election in Ablekuma North, which is located in the Greater Accra area.

Despite full voter turnout, the constituency’s parliamentary outcome has not yet been formally announced, some six months after the general election on December 7, 2024.

Since January 7, the residents have been denied representation due to the uncertainty.

In the fiercely contested seat, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC have both declared victory.

However, there have been incidents of violence, missing pink sheets, and legal interventions throughout the collation process. Police had to step in after many attempts to finalize the results ended in altercations.

After disparities in results from at least 20 polling places surfaced in January, the Electoral Commission (EC) delayed the collation. The situation was exacerbated when a fire destroyed some voting materials at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools.

The Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, is delivering the Minority’s demands to the police. A final resolution has not yet been announced by the EC.

Important organizations, such as the Ghana Bar Association and CODEO, have demanded immediate action in the meantime; if the impasse continues, CODEO has even suggested a potential repeat.

The Minority Caucus presented their petition, calling on the EC and law enforcement to provide urgent clarity and accountability. They cautioned that further delay threatens democracy and the rights of the people of Ablekuma North.
