NPP’s Abronye on hunger strike in police custody

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, has begun a hunger strike while in police custody, according to his lawyer, Enoch Afoakwa.

Afoakwa explained that his client’s action is a protest against what he describes as political persecution. “Abronye is a man full of life. He knows this is just mere political persecution, and certainly he is hopeful that his liberty will be restored,” he stated.

He added that Abronye is refusing both food and water as a form of self-protection, stressing that his client does not trust those handling him in detention. “When they give you food, will you take it? When they give you water, will you take it? Certainly, he needs to protect his life, and under the circumstances, that is the reason he is on hunger strike,” Afoakwa explained.

Abronye was arrested on Monday, September 8, and remanded by an Accra Circuit Court the following day on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.

The court granted a two-week remand period to allow prosecutors to complete investigations. He is set to reappear on September 26, 2025.

The case has sparked nationwide attention, given Abronye’s prominence within the NPP and his reputation for outspoken political commentary.
