AdubianewsMinister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has raised serious concerns about the inefficiencies within Ghana’s road sector, pointing to flawed contract structures that undermine value for money. He believes the current system fails to deliver infrastructure efficiently and requires urgent reform.
Speaking during a radio interview, the minister highlighted how poorly structured contracts, combined with political interference, continue to hinder progress. He noted that projects are often pushed forward without adequate technical assessment, leading to delays and waste.
He further explained that technical experts frequently face pressure from political authorities, which forces them to implement projects before necessary groundwork is completed. This dynamic, he noted, limits the effectiveness of road construction efforts nationwide.
According to Agbodza, the blame does not rest solely with contractors. Instead, the core issues lie within the public institutions responsible for managing the contract processes. Weak oversight and rushed decisions are said to be key contributors to the inefficiencies in road delivery.
He also revealed that more than 90 percent of road contractors across the country are currently inactive. This, he attributed to funding gaps and longstanding structural problems in how contracts are awarded and executed.
