The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has called on residents of Akwatia to throw their support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Bernard Bediako, in the upcoming by-election.
Addressing party supporters on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Mr. Debrah relayed a personal message from President John Dramani Mahama, urging voters to back the NDC hopeful. “John Mahama says I should tell you, the people of Akwatia, that he wants to work with the NDC candidate Bernard Bediako in his government,” he declared.
The by-election, set for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, has generated strong interest from both the ruling NDC and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). It follows the passing of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
Mr. Debrah stressed that victory for the NDC would strengthen the government’s partnership with the people of Akwatia and accelerate ongoing development projects in the area.
Recent opinion polls suggest the NDC candidate is in a favorable position. A survey by Sanity Africa, conducted between August 1 and 27, projects Bernard Bediako at 52.3% against 47.7% for the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu, a margin of 4.6 points.
Similarly, Global Info Analytics forecasts Bediako with 53% support compared to Asumadu’s 47%, signaling that the NDC candidate enters the by-election as the frontrunner.
