AMA task force removing unauthorised structures along major streets in Accra

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has intensified efforts to reclaim public spaces by removing unauthorised structures erected along major roads and on government-reserved lands across the metropolis.

The enforcement operation, led by Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, targeted several key locations, including the Awudome Cemetery stretch, Awudome Roundabout, the frontage of Royal House Chapel, North Kaneshie Last Stop, and parts of the Tuesday Market, where informal structures had encroached on public space.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Thursday, January 22, the AMA said the exercise forms part of sustained measures to reclaim road shoulders, walkways, and public lands unlawfully occupied by traders and other users.

The Assembly noted that unauthorised structures contribute significantly to sanitation problems, traffic congestion, and public safety risks, underscoring the need for strict enforcement of city bylaws.

According to the AMA, the ongoing removals are also part of broader preparations ahead of a planned city-wide decongestion exercise scheduled for February 1.

The Assembly issued a strong warning to individuals affected by the operation, cautioning that anyone who attempts to return to cleared areas will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The AMA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order in the city and ensuring that public spaces are used for their intended purposes as part of efforts to improve safety and sanitation across Accra.
