The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church has added its voice to the wave of grief sweeping across Ghana following Wednesday’s military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two government ministers.
In a statement released Thursday, the Presiding Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Hilliard K. Dela Dogbe extended heartfelt condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the Government, the Ghana Armed Forces, and all bereaved families. The Bishop described the disaster as a heartbreaking national tragedy that has “shaken the nation to its very core.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all who have been impacted. We stand united with the nation in mourning,” the statement read.
Dr. Dogbe emphasized the immense sacrifice of the deceased, whom he described as “gallant men who paid the ultimate price in service to our dear nation.” He reminded Ghanaians that moments of tragedy are opportunities to lean on divine strength, quoting scripture to reassure the nation: “God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in trouble.”
The Church’s message of solace and unity came amid a growing tide of tributes from across political, religious, and civic communities. As Ghana continues to mourn, the AME Zion Church called on citizens to reflect deeply on the selflessness and commitment exhibited by the fallen.
“May the memories of the departed live on, and may their sacrifice spur us on to offer our best in selfless service to God and Ghana,” Bishop Dogbe concluded.
In response to the tragedy, national flags remain at half-mast, while various religious groups, including churches and mosques, are holding intercessory prayers for the departed. The official cause of the crash remains under investigation, as the country searches for answers in the wake of an unimaginable loss.
