The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into a violent incident in which a patrol team from the Jacobu District Police was attacked by a group of civilians at Bepotenten Sukuum in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on Friday, January 23, 2026, while officers were carrying out routine patrol duties in the area, according to a statement shared by the Ghana Police Service on its official Facebook page.
The police said the patrol team recovered a pump-action gun from a 15-year-old boy during the operation. The officers subsequently instructed the juvenile to inform the owner of the weapon to report to the police station with the appropriate documentation to justify possession of the firearm.
However, while the patrol team was returning from the operation, they were confronted by a large crowd estimated at about 100 people, who had blocked the road.
According to the Police Command, the group was armed with cutlasses and firearms and launched an attack on the officers.
“While returning from patrol, the team was confronted by a crowd of approximately 100 individuals blocking the road, armed with cutlasses and firearms. The group assaulted officers and seized a service rifle,” the statement said.
The officers were reportedly assaulted, and a service rifle belonging to one of the officers was forcibly taken during the confrontation.
In the course of the disturbance, police opened fire, resulting in the individual who seized the service rifle being shot. Another person also sustained injuries during the incident.
The Police Command later confirmed that the seized service rifle was successfully retrieved.
Both injured individuals were said to have received medical attention, while investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest all persons involved in the attack.
In a statement, the Ashanti Regional Police Command strongly condemned the attack on its officers and warned the public against acts of violence directed at law enforcement personnel.
“The Police Command would like to once again caution the public against attacks on our officers, since perpetrators will be pursued and arrested to face the full rigours of the law,” the statement added.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order in the region and urged residents to cooperate with the police in the discharge of their lawful duties, stressing that any obstruction or violent conduct against officers would be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
