Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has officially received a copy of the historic Bond of 1844 from the British National Archives, marking a significant moment in Ghana’s journey to preserve its colonial and political history.

The symbolic presentation took place during a courtesy call by the Head of International Affairs of the British National Archives and the Chargé d’Affaires of the British High Commission. The document, signed between British officials and local chiefs in the Gold Coast, is widely regarded as the foundation of British legal and political influence in Ghana.

“It is a historic moment for me and the people of Ghana as this document captures an important part of the development of Ghana,” Mr. Bagbin said during the brief ceremony.

He revealed that the Bond of 1844 will be permanently displayed at the newly opened parliamentary museum as part of efforts to document and promote the nation’s legislative and colonial heritage. The museum is part of Parliament’s broader initiative to educate the public on Ghana’s governance history.

The handover also reflects a growing partnership between Ghana’s Parliament and global institutions dedicated to archival preservation and cultural heritage. Officials noted that more collaborative efforts may follow to support Ghana’s museum and documentation projects.
