The Bank of Ghana launches Cedi@60 to celebrate six decades of Ghana’s currency, symbolizing sovereignty, stability, and economic resilience.

Ghana’s national currency, the cedi, turns 60 years old this year, a remarkable milestone the Bank of Ghana (BoG) is commemorating under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”

The official launch of the Cedi@60 celebrations will take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Center, with President John Dramani Mahama serving as the Special Guest of Honor.

The national celebration will feature a Currency Conference, gathering experts from global central banks, academia, and the private sector to reflect on six decades of Ghana’s monetary history and explore the future of the nation’s financial system.

Beyond the main event, several flagship activities are planned across the country. These include regional roadshows, public education campaigns on clean note handling and currency security, and youth-focused competitions in art, music, and essay writing, all aimed at deepening public appreciation for the history and symbolism of the cedi.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the Cedi@60 commemoration is not just a celebration but also a moment to reaffirm the nation’s monetary sovereignty and economic resilience. The Bank noted that the initiative seeks to boost public engagement on currency management and renew national confidence in the cedi as a core symbol of Ghana’s stability and identity.

Introduced on July 19, 1965, the cedi has undergone several reforms and redesigns over the decades. Despite economic challenges, it remains a powerful emblem of Ghana’s independence and development journey.

The year-long celebration is expected to culminate in heightened public awareness of the cedi’s historical legacy and a renewed collective commitment to protecting its integrity for future generations.
