Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has publicly apologized for the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections. Speaking during a recent address in London, Dr. Bawumia took full responsibility for the defeat and acknowledged the party’s shortcomings.

“The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that, but we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf and on behalf of the party, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the figures right,” he said.

Candid Reflection on Defeat

Dr. Bawumia outlined several reasons behind the party’s disappointing performance, citing:

  • The high cost of living
  • Public anger over the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP)
  • A growing perception of arrogance within the party’s leadership

He admitted these challenges contributed to public dissatisfaction, voter apathy, and a loss of trust.

“The people were suffering, and we did not do enough to ease their burden,” he admitted.

Election Results Recap

In the 2024 general elections, the NPP suffered a major setback. John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the presidency with 56.55% of the vote, while Bawumia secured 41.61%. The NDC also gained a clear majority in Parliament, winning 183 out of 276 seats.

Call for Unity and Reform

Despite the loss, Dr. Bawumia encouraged NPP supporters to stay united and optimistic. He called for internal reform, grassroots engagement, and a renewed focus on rebuilding trust.

“This is not the end for us. Let us learn, regroup, and work harder to reconnect with the people,” he said.

As the NPP begins a period of reflection and restructuring, Dr. Bawumia’s message sets the tone for a critical chapter in the party’s future.
