A pillar of the June 4 Revolution, Major Boakye-Djan (rtd) who was earlier arrested by the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) over his recent alleged warmongering comments, has been granted bail.

Osahene Boakye-Djan was released from police custody after hours of interrogation by personnel of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service.

The retired military officer who is a leading member of the opposition NDC, in a recent interview on Accra-based Okay FM warned of a possible civil war should the Electoral Commission proceed with its plans of compiling a new voters’ register.

His pronouncement subsequently brought him under a barrage of condemnations, particularly from elements of the governing New Patriotic Party, with the party’s National Youth Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye calling for his immediate arrest.

Osahene Boakye-Djan had earlier failed to honour an invitation extended to him by the security agencies to assist in the investigation into his said claims.

Confirming the release of his client, lawyer for the retired major, Foster Akwasi Asante denied claims the comments of Osahene Boakye-Djan could spark a civil war saying it was not meant to instigate or to call people to war but rather an admonishing for the EC not to do anything that could trigger civil unrest.
