AdubianewsBroda Sammy Mourns the Loss of His Mother, Auntie Kokwaa
Ghanaian gospel musician Broda Sammy, born Samuel Opoku, is grieving the heartbreaking loss of his beloved mother, affectionately known as Auntie Kokwaa. She passed away in the early hours of May 20, 2025, at around 2:00 a.m. in Bremang, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Auntie Kokwaa, who was 80 years old, had reportedly battled a long-term illness prior to her passing. Her death has left a profound void in the life of Broda Sammy, who was her only child. The gospel artist took to his official Instagram page shortly after her passing to share the sad news, describing May 20 as a “Black Tuesday” in his life.
In a deeply emotional message, Broda Sammy expressed his sorrow and reflected on the warmth, love, and care his mother had always shown him. Her unwavering support, he noted, had been the foundation of his journey both as a person and as a musician.
A one-week observation in honor of Auntie Kokwaa has been scheduled for Sunday, June 8, 2025, at Bremang Fie, near Bremang Station in Kumasi. The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and is expected to draw family, friends, fans, and members of the gospel music community who wish to pay their respects and stand in solidarity with Broda Sammy during this difficult time.
The passing of Broda Sammy’s mother has drawn an outpouring of love and condolences from fans and fellow gospel musicians across the country, as they rally around him with prayers and support.
As the gospel community mourns alongside him, many are also celebrating the life of a woman whose presence and sacrifices helped shape one of Ghana’s most prominent gospel voices.
May her soul rest in perfect peace.
