Cadman Atta Mills condemns galamsey and calls on President Mahama to take decisive action

Ghana’s fight against illegal mining has once again come under sharp criticism, this time from Cadman Atta Mills, brother of the late President John Evans Atta Mills. He says the menace of galamsey is wreaking havoc on communities, farmlands, and water bodies while the government turns a blind eye.

In a passionate statement on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Mills lamented that the destruction of natural resources cannot be brushed aside by pointing to economic gains such as the cedi’s recovery.

“I refuse to pay for the accolades President Mahama and the NDC are receiving for the cedi’s recovery with my health or life,” he wrote.

He cautioned that whether described as galamsey or presented as “legal” small-scale mining run by politically connected individuals, the outcome is identical—irreversible damage to the environment and dangerous health risks for citizens. “It is killing us,” Mr. Mills warned.

Calling for urgent intervention, Mr. Mills urged President Mahama to take bold, decisive action to end galamsey once and for all, stressing that Ghana’s future depends on protecting its land, water, and people from further devastation.
