A 36-year-old cashier, Lemuel Addo, has been arraigned before the Circuit Court in Accra for allegedly misappropriating GH¢388,615.00 belonging to SIC Life Insurance Limited. He has been charged with one count of stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Justice Evelyn Asamoah, sitting as an additional judge of the Circuit Court. He was granted bail in the sum of GH¢400,000 with four sureties, two of which must be justified with valid title deeds.

He has also been ordered to deposit his passport with the court registry, and investigators have been directed to verify with the Passport Office whether he holds a Ghanaian passport. According to the brief facts presented by Detective Chief Inspector Francis Odour, the complainant, Bridget BorsuroKalinya, an insurance officer at SIC Life, reported the alleged theft.

On May 16, 2025, Addo, who worked as a cashier at the Sika Plan (Okum-Kal), a subsidiary of SIC Life, received a total premium of GH¢703,775.00 from customers to be deposited into the company’s account at Republic Bank.

However, on May 19, 2025, the accused allegedly deposited only GH¢315,160.00, leaving GH¢388,615.00 unaccounted for. When confronted, Addo reportedly claimed that he had made a double deposit, but further checks revealed no such transaction had occurred.

Investigations later suggested that the accused used the missing funds to facilitate visa arrangements for a planned trip abroad. During police interrogation, Addo denied the offence and attributed the shortage to an earlier deficit from March 2025. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

The prosecution, led by Inspector Felix Agyei, has been directed to file all disclosures and witness statements by July 30, 2025. The case has been adjourned to August 11, 2025, for further hearing.
