“Cheddar Signed Me at 19” – D-Black Shares Early Career Story

Desmond Kwesi Blackmore, popularly known as D-Black, CEO of Black Avenue Muzik, has shared insights into his early journey in the Ghanaian music industry, revealing that his first record deal came from none other than Freedom Jacob Caesar, also known as Cheddar.

In an interview with Zionfelix, the award-winning rapper and music entrepreneur opened up about how Cheddar signed him and fellow artist Richie Mensah, now the CEO of Lynx Entertainment, one of Ghana’s most successful record labels.

“A lot of people don’t really think about it, but I started with Richie. We were in the same studios. You know who signed us? Freedom Jacob Caesar. I think I was nineteen and Richie was twenty or twenty-one,” D-Black disclosed.

Reflecting on his long-standing friendship with Richie Mensah, D-Black mentioned that the bond has lasted for over two decades and remains strong to this day.

The rapper also touched on his broader experience in the music industry, noting that he has built meaningful relationships and helped many along the way. Despite some disappointments, he acknowledged that there are still individuals who deeply appreciate his influence and continue to show him respect.

D-Black has played a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s music industry, not only as a successful rapper but also as a record label executive. Through Black Avenue Muzik, he has nurtured and promoted emerging talents. His entrepreneurial spirit and consistency have earned him recognition as a key figure in modern Ghanaian music.
