Ghana Police CID officers conducting investigations in Accra

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has opened an investigation into allegations made by an American national, Arianna Naomi Mackey, who claimed in a viral video that she was kidnapped and robbed by five masked men posing as police officers in Accra.

According to the CID, the video that circulated widely on social media was recorded at a hotel in Accra where Mackey had been staying with two other individuals. Preliminary checks by investigators indicate that the group checked out of the hotel on December 5, 2025, the same day Mackey departed Ghana through the Kotoka International Airport.

Police say efforts to obtain detailed information from the complainant have so far been unsuccessful. Mackey reportedly informed investigators that she was unable to identify the alleged officers involved or provide the registration number of the vehicle used in the incident.

She also declined to share the contact details of a friend who was said to be present during the alleged ordeal, explaining that the individual did not wish to cooperate with the investigation.

The CID further revealed that the video has since been removed from Mackey’s social media platforms, and multiple attempts to reach her through WhatsApp calls and messages have not yielded any response. As a result, investigators are exploring the use of appropriate diplomatic channels to secure her cooperation.

Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of the CID, Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, said the Ghana Police Service takes allegations of misconduct and criminal activity very seriously and remains committed to establishing the full facts surrounding the incident.
