CK Akonnor appointed Gor Mahia head coach, opens opportunities for Ghanaian players

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Ibrahim Sannie Daara believes CK Akonnor’s appointment as head coach of Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia could serve as a breakthrough avenue for Ghanaian players seeking international exposure.

Akonnor recently signed a two-year contract with the East African club and will be assisted by Bismark Kobby Mensah as assistant coach and Ben Owu as the goalkeepers’ trainer.

Speaking on Luv FM, Sannie described the move as a strategic opportunity that could open the floodgates for Ghanaian footballers to secure deals with the Kenyan champions.

“They’ve seen that there are lots of opportunities for them to also make money via the Club World Cup. So they’ll be counting on CK to find them not only talents in Kenya but also talents outside Kenya—particularly in Ghana—they’ll be targeting Ghanaian players for recruitment,” Sannie stated.

He added that the club is optimistic Akonnor can help reshape Gor Mahia’s fortunes, tapping into both his technical expertise and talent-scouting abilities.

“They are hopeful that he can help them turn the corner, and I know that he knows football talent when he sees one. I believe he’ll be able to find some within the Kenyan sphere to deliver,” he said.

CK Akonnor brings with him a wealth of experience, having managed Ghana’s two most iconic clubs, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, as well as Dreams FC, Sekondi Eleven Wise, and the Ghana national team (Black Stars).

His appointment marks a bold new chapter not just for Gor Mahia but also for Ghanaian football, as scouts and clubs may increasingly turn their attention to players in Ghana’s local leagues.
