Gospel musician Nana Yaw Asare has blamed Osei Kwame Despite, John Mensah Sarpong and Mark Okraku Mantey as the individuals who introduced payola into the music industry.
The ‘Odomankoma’ hitmaker said these three individuals should be blamed for the current trend because they were the ones who influenced the system with money.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Togo Borga on GH Entertainment on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, the musician bemoaned the demand of payola by DJs and other presenters before playing songs of musicians.
In his view, about 90% of Ghanaian DJs do not play songs if a musician does not pay them payola.
Nana Yaw Asare told the host his former manager Kwame Mikky spent a lot of money in paying payola before his [Asare] songs played on air.
When asked if he had made enough money from music, he said money is not the only thing that defines success.
”My music has impacted lives and that is what I am proud of as a musician.”
On the rights he receives from GHAMRO, he described it as woefully inadequate but failed to disclose the figure.
