Deputy Spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, has voiced strong opposition to the government’s proposed Cybersecurity Amendment Bill, describing it as a move to control public access to information and limit free expression.
Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Amoakoh expressed concern that the bill poses a serious threat to digital freedom and could be used to suppress criticism of the government.
“I find it very worrying that this government, in its first year in office, seeks to do something so treacherous,” she said. “If you seek to control what citizens have access to, you are essentially trying to hold the internet architecture under your thumb so that if it is used to criticize you, you can take it down.”
She cautioned that the bill, if passed, might set a dangerous precedent for freedom of expression in Ghana. According to her, such legislation could be “weaponized against citizens” to silence dissenting voices in the future.
The Cybersecurity Amendment Bill 2025 has stirred significant debate online, especially under the trending hashtag #ScrapCSABill2025, as critics warn that it could grant the state excessive power to monitor or restrict digital activity.
Supporters of the bill, however, insist that the move is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s cybersecurity framework, combating cybercrime, misinformation, and online fraud. The proposed amendment forms part of the government’s broader digital governance reforms.
For Dr Amoakoh, though, the timing and broad scope of the bill raise serious concerns about transparency and the protection of citizens’ digital rights.
