AdubianewsPresidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah has thrown her support behind demands for DStv, operated by MultiChoice Ghana, to reduce its subscription fees for Ghanaian consumers. Her comments align with earlier statements made by Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, who has issued a stern warning to the company.
Speaking in a recent interview, Ms. Jantuah criticised DStv’s high pricing model, describing the platform’s content as outdated and subpar.
“I agree with the Minister. They (DStv) should reduce their prices because their content is even horrible. I keep DStv in my home because of the men in my house,” she said.
“Sometimes when you look at the summary of the film, it’s from 1978. Apart from the African Magic content, all the foreign content is old,” she added.
Her comments come amid widespread public backlash over recent tariff hikes introduced by MultiChoice Ghana in July 2025. Many subscribers have taken to social media to express frustration, noting that the premium fees charged do not reflect the quality or freshness of content offered on the platform.
At the Government’s Accountability Series, Minister Sam George warned that DStv’s operating licence could be suspended by Wednesday, August 7, if the company fails to revise its pricing in accordance with regulatory expectations.
He stressed that consumer interests must come first, not profits.
“We will not allow MultiChoice to continue to take Ghanaians for granted,” he said. “Their subscription model is unfair, and the regulatory environment will be used to correct this.”
In response, MultiChoice Ghana issued a statement on Sunday, August 3, calling the minister’s ultimatum “regrettable,” and claiming the company has made good-faith efforts to engage with both the Minister and the National Communications Authority (NCA) on the matter.
The statement emphasized that the company is committed to open and constructive dialogue and that pricing structures are influenced by content licensing costs, exchange rate fluctuations, and market dynamics.
Despite the pushback, Minister Sam George has reaffirmed his commitment to enforcing regulatory action against MultiChoice, insisting that the company must adjust its pricing model to match Ghanaian economic realities and consumer expectations.
With increasing support from government officials and citizens alike, pressure continues to mount on DStv to revise its subscription pricing or risk regulatory sanctions in the days ahead.
