The Agona Swedru Circuit Court has sentenced two men to a combined 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for stealing electricity cables and equipment belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Ebenezer Fosu, alias Kwame Okae, a 39-year-old fisherman, received a 15-year sentence, while Abubakar Sadick, a 24-year-old scrap dealer, was handed a 10-year sentence. Both men pleaded guilty and were convicted on their own plea by the presiding judge, Justice Jonathan Nunoo.

A third suspect, identified only as Nana, remains at large and is believed to have masterminded the theft.

How the Crime Unfolded

According to Inspector Bernice Nyarkowah, on July 9, 2025, Fosu and Nana conspired to steal electrical cables from the premises of Young Rui Company at Gomoa Mprumen, near Winneba in the Central Region.

The two contacted Sadick, who operates a tricycle, and arranged for him to transport the stolen items to a scrap shop.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on July 10, Fosu and Nana cut ECG cables from the main transmission poles supplying the company. The stolen items included:

  • ECG cables valued at GH¢81,000

  • Two car batteries valued at GH¢2,000

Following the theft, the items were loaded into the tricycle. However, while attempting to transport them through Simbrofo, the group encountered a police checkpoint. Upon spotting the officers, the suspects abandoned the tricycle and tried to flee.

Police officers managed to arrest Fosu and Sadick after brief questioning. Nana, however, escaped and is still being pursued by authorities.

During interrogation, Fosu led investigators to the crime scene and admitted to the theft. Sadick also confessed to his role in the crime.

Charges and Conviction

Fosu faced multiple charges, including:

  • Conspiracy to commit a crime (stealing)

  • Causing unlawful damage

  • Stealing

  • Interference with a supplier’s distribution system

Sadick was charged with abetment to commit a crime. Both men were sentenced based on their confessions and the evidence presented.
