AdubianewsThe Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is urging the public to refrain from engaging in illegal electricity meter transfers, warning that such actions violate national laws and ECG regulations.
Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager for External Communications at ECG, noted that every meter issued by the company is uniquely tied to a specific location and cannot be moved arbitrarily.
A meter issued by ECG is registered to a particular location. It cannot be transferred, especially from immovable structures such as residential buildings, he clarified.
According to ECG, unauthorised meter relocation can lead to service disruptions, billing system failures, and potential legal consequences. The company further explained that while transfers are permissible in some cases, they are subject to strict conditions.
These transfers must be carried out by ECG-authorised personnel upon official request. Transfers involving permanent or immovable structures are strictly prohibited, Dr Ayiku emphasised.
He added that only movable structures, such as kiosks and containers, are eligible for meter transfers, and only within the same ECG district.
Transferring a meter without ECG’s consent is a violation of both company policy and national laws. We urge customers to follow due process, he warned.
The utility provider also called on the public to report any suspicious meter activity to the nearest ECG district office or through verified communication platforms.
Dr Ayiku ended by appealing to customers to cooperate with the company in maintaining a stable and safe power distribution system.
