The former President led a military junta in 1979 until 1992 and then served two terms as the democratic elect President of Ghana under the NDC.
Jerry John Rawlings resigned from the military, founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and became the first President of Ghana of the 4th Republic. He was re-elected in 1996 for 4 more years.
Just five weeks before scheduled democratic elections were due to take place, he led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government on 15th May 1979, before the Coup in 1979.
Earlier this morning, November 12, Sad news came that Jerry John Rawlings died at the Korle Bu Teachings Hospital after contracting COVID-19.
