A high-powered military team led by the Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, on Saturday, May 22 embarked upon a recce of illegal mining sites so far covered by Operation Halt.
“The Reconnaissance Team came across signs which indicated that there were still some illegal mining activities going on in some of the areas that had hitherto been cleared by Operation HALT II,” a press release issued by the Ghana Armed Forces on Sunday, May 23 noted.
According to the release, these illegal activities were mostly being done in the night with the miners protected by armed guards.
It noted again that used cartridges were found at the sites.
“The Operation HALT II patrol that accompanied the Team were ordered to destroy logistics found in these areas.”
The military, consequently, warn that any equipment found in and around water bodies and forest reserves would be destroyed, stressing that their operation is still in progress.
The operation by the military to burn all equipment used in illegal mining on water bodies began in April.
The second phase was launched on Friday, May 7.
