Kofi Adams announces plans for 50,000-seater Borteyman stadium

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has unveiled plans for a 50,000-seater stadium at the Borteyman Sports Complex, part of a government strategy to transform the area into a modern sports city.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Mr. Adams admitted that Ghana’s sports sector faces serious infrastructure challenges. However, he said the government is determined to deliver facilities that meet international standards.

“We are looking to have a new stadium of that size around our Borteyman Sports Complex because we want to elevate that whole space into a sports city or village so that international clubs can come and camp and train there,” he explained.

Accommodation and funding model

According to the minister, the project will include residential facilities to host national teams and visiting clubs.

“With such a facility, we will also add accommodation. When this is done, in the future, you will not see accommodation for the Black Stars in the national budget. But we are working on a PPP arrangement,” he noted.

Completion before 2028

Mr. Adams disclosed that the government is targeting a minimum capacity of 50,000 seats, with completion scheduled before 2028.

“We want to do a minimum of 50,000 in the Borteyman space, and we should be able to finish it before 2028,” he stated.

Boosting sports tourism

The Borteyman project, he added, forms part of a wider effort to position Ghana as a leading sports hub in Africa. The government hopes the stadium and sports city will attract international teams for training camps, promote sports tourism, and stimulate economic activity in the surrounding communities.
