Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has voiced strong concerns about the performance of Black Stars coach Otto Addo, warning that the national team must raise its game to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
His comments come amid mounting pressure on the Black Stars’ technical team, following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Chad on Friday, September 5, and a narrow 1-0 win over Mali on Monday, September 8.
Despite the recent victory, Mr. Adams said the team’s performance remained far from convincing. Speaking on the Citi FM Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, he raised doubts about Ghana’s consistency in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.
“Very soon, AFCON is going to start in Morocco. Are we going to be part of it? No, we will watch on TV. We have not even qualified for the World Cup yet. We still need a win and at least a draw to comfortably say that, as far as our group is concerned, nobody can overtake us,” he stated.
The Sports Minister further argued that Otto Addo’s performance does not merit praise, given the circumstances.
“If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job. I am not. There is a lot of room for improvement. Even when you meet the coach himself, he admits that he got things wrong and takes responsibility. But the question is: for how long will you continue to take blame for wrong decisions?” Mr. Adams questioned.
His remarks add to the growing scrutiny facing Ghana’s technical bench, as fans and stakeholders demand improved results ahead of major tournaments. The government hopes the team can find form quickly to restore confidence and secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.
