President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that Ghana’s bilateral trade with China reached US$11.8 billion in 2024, representing a growth of more than 7 percent compared to the previous year.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the China Global Television Network (CGTN), President Mahama said China continues to be Ghana’s largest trading partner, with trade volumes expanding steadily as both countries deepen economic cooperation.

“Eleven-point-eight billion dollars of trade between Ghana and China in 2024 — that is more than a 7 percent annual increase,” the President noted.

He attributed the growth partly to the implementation of China’s zero-tariff policy, which he said is beginning to create a more favourable environment for expanding trade relations.

“China is Ghana’s biggest trading partner, and trade between Ghana and China has continued to grow exponentially. The zero-tariff policy is now kicking in, and I believe it will create a conducive atmosphere for us to grow that trade even more,” Mahama said.

The interview comes as Ghana and China mark 65 years of diplomatic relations, a milestone both countries have described as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation amid evolving global economic and geopolitical dynamics.

President Mahama’s remarks were made during a wide-ranging discussion on CGTN’s Leaders Talk programme, hosted by Wang Guan, which also touched on his recent engagement with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The conversation examined China’s proposed Global Governance Initiative, aimed at strengthening collaboration with developing countries at a time of heightened global tensions.

Mahama praised China’s longstanding support for Africa’s infrastructure development, industrialisation and vocational training, noting that Beijing continues to play a crucial role in Ghana’s modernisation agenda.

As Ghana seeks to transition from political independence to full economic transformation, the President said deeper economic collaboration with China will be central to shaping the country’s next phase of development.

The interview forms part of renewed high-level engagements between Accra and Beijing, as both nations look to expand trade, investment, and technological cooperation in the years ahead.
