The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate closure of its embassy in Tehran, citing rising tensions between Iran and Israel. The move, aimed at protecting Ghanaian citizens, was revealed by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in a social media post on Monday, June 16.

“The Mahama administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” the minister stated.

“To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect.”

Mr Ablakwa noted that the evacuation process is being carried out through Iran’s land borders. It will include all Ghanaian nationals residing in the country, such as diplomats, students, professionals, and other citizens.

He assured the public that every necessary step is being taken to ensure the safe evacuation of affected individuals.

The minister also confirmed that the government is monitoring developments in Israel and may issue further updates when necessary.

“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” he added.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its citizens and called for a peaceful diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
