Ghana Health Service Reacts to COVID-19 Outbreak at University of Ghana

A recent spike in COVID-19 cases at the University of Ghana has prompted the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to release a public health advisory, warning that the pandemic still poses a threat even as national cases remain low.

Despite the World Health Organisation’s decision to no longer classify COVID-19 as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the GHS noted in a June 26 statement that consistent nationwide surveillance remains in place. Ghana has experienced a steady decline in infections over the past year, but health officials are maintaining a cautious approach.

Monitoring continues across all 16 regions through collaboration between the GHS and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), under an integrated influenza and COVID-19 surveillance programme. The latest rise in cases has so far been limited to the University of Ghana campus, with all affected individuals showing only mild symptoms and no hospital admissions reported.

The GHS is working closely with university authorities to manage the situation and adjust public health measures where necessary. The Service urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant and continue practicing key safety measures such as handwashing, masking in crowded spaces, social distancing, and staying home when symptomatic. It also reminded the public that sporadic outbreaks remain possible and may follow seasonal patterns.
