The Government of Ghana will on Wednesday, December 10, summon officials of the Israeli Embassy in Accra following what authorities describe as the unjust and unacceptable treatment of Ghanaian travellers at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport.
In a strongly worded statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that seven Ghanaian citizens, including four Members of Parliament, were detained upon arrival in Tel Aviv on Sunday, December 7, without any clear explanation from Israeli authorities.
The detained MPs were part of a parliamentary delegation travelling to participate in the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference. According to the ministry, the delegation was held for more than five hours and released only after intense diplomatic intervention by Ghanaian officials.
However, the remaining three Ghanaian travellers were denied entry into Israel and deported on the next available flight, returning to Ghana shortly afterward.
The ministry stressed that Ghana’s diplomatic mission complied fully with international diplomatic protocols and dismissed explanations provided by Israeli authorities as unconvincing and unacceptable.
Government officials further indicated that reciprocal diplomatic measures are being considered if Israel fails to provide a satisfactory explanation and assurances to prevent similar incidents in the future.
