GMet Warns of More Heavy Rainfall and Flood Risks Across Ghana

Published

on

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned that more heavy rains and possible flash floods are expected in the coming weeks. This comes after strong rainfall on May 18, 2025, caused serious flooding in parts of Accra and other low-lying areas.

Early Signs from May 15 Forecast

On May 15, GMet issued a 24-hour forecast predicting a mix of sunshine and thunderstorms. Areas like Accra, Kasoa, Cape Coast, Axim, and Aflao were told to expect rain with a 40% chance of storms.

Shortly after, on May 18, these warnings proved accurate as heavy rains flooded places such as Kaneshie, Ashaley Botwe, Okponglo, and Shiashie.

What Is Causing the Heavy Rains?

GMet’s Deputy Director of Forecasting, Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, explained that the rains are due to high moisture levels and storm systems from the Guinea Coast. These are moving inland and triggering rainfall in many regions.

“The peak of the rainy season is here. Places like Ho, Techiman, Kete Krachi, Kumasi, and Oda are likely to see more rainfall in the coming days,” he added.

Advice to the Public

GMet is asking residents, especially those in flood-prone areas, to stay alert and take precautions. People are advised to:

  • Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters
  • Stay updated via official weather channels
  • Temporarily relocate if living in high-risk zones

The agency also warns that flooding may continue as June marks the peak of the rainy season.
