Contractors resuming work on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway after GH¢809m government payment

The Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, has confirmed that the government has fully disbursed GH¢809 million to the contractor working on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway project. The announcement, made on Monday, August 18, comes as contractors return to the site, bringing relief to commuters who have endured weeks of gridlock due to stalled construction.

According to Mr Agyei, the government made the payments in three instalments — partial payments on July 24 and July 30, with the final settlement made on August 4. “In total, we have honoured the full amount of GH¢809 million as requested,” he explained in an interview with Peace FM.

The resumption of work coincides with the nearing deadline of a one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). The Union had warned that it would suspend transport services if the government failed to ensure the contractor’s return to the site. The ultimatum was set to expire on Wednesday, August 20.

The Pokuase–Nsawam stretch is a critical road link, carrying heavy traffic between Accra and major towns in the Eastern Region. Prolonged delays on the project had caused severe congestion, sparking frustration among drivers, passengers, and transport operators.

With funding cleared and contractors back at work, stakeholders are hopeful that construction will now progress without further disruption.
