AdubianewsThe Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 25, 2025. The decision follows recent decreases in fuel prices and an appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
This fare adjustment was reached after a meeting between the GPRTU, the Ministry of Transport, and other key stakeholders.
Why the Fare Has Been Reduced
The GPRTU explained that the fare cut reflects current market conditions. Fuel prices have gone down in recent weeks, easing operational costs for drivers. In addition, the cedi has gained strength against major currencies, further reducing expenses in the transport sector.
“This is a smiley reduction,” said Alhaji Imoro Abass, GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer. “Passengers will feel some relief.”
When the New Fares Begin
The new transport fares will take effect on May 25, 2025. GPRTU is calling on all commercial drivers to comply with the updated pricing. They also urge passengers to be aware of the new fares.
If drivers do not follow the directive, the union has asked passengers not to confront them, but rather report such cases to the nearest police station.
The union promises to continue reviewing fares in line with economic changes, ensuring fairness for both drivers and passengers.
